Six of the women whose videos were posted online spoke at Gyi’s sentencing, and each said Gyi assured them their videos would not be seen on the internet, but soon discovered they had been lied to. Pratt’s GirlsDoPorn co-conspirator, Michael Isaac Wolfe, admitted to coercing about 100 “models” between the ages of 18 and 23 into making pornographic videos for their San Diego-based website, which he said would not be shared in the United States. A former pageant queen is alleging she was raped and forced to film pornography in a new lawsuit against Pornhub and its parent company, MindGeek, which changed its name to Aylo in August. The videos eventually led to a federal investigation and criminal charges, according to the lawsuit which lists 121 “Jane Doe” plaintiffs.

Her rapist, Ruben Andre Garcia, was sentenced in June 2021 to 20 years in prison. His sentencing came several months after he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit sex trafficking by force, coercion, and fraud, and admitted to his part in recruiting for and performing in GirlsDoPorn videos. Once the women arrived in San Diego to shoot, they said, they were lured to a hotel room, where they were plied with marijuana and alcohol. They were then asked to participate in a pornographic video shoot, with the producers telling them that the final product would only be distributed via DVD in foreign countries. The women allege that Pratt and Wolfe also hired a woman, Amberlyn Nored, to pose as a “reference” to reassure them that the final product would not be posted online. GirlsDoPorn and GirlsDoToys were sex trafficking operations whose leaders admitted that, from 2013 to 2019, they convinced victims to make adult videos by lying that their imagery would only be sold to private collectors abroad and not posted online.

Garcia used young women as recruiters, because victims “were more likely to believe other young women.” The references were paid a fixed fee for every victim they attempted to recruit and additional compensation for victims who agreed to film a video. As a part of the conspiracy, Garcia and others would at times coerce victims into completing the videos once they were underway. Garcia and other co-conspirators threatened to sue the victims, cancel flights home, and post the videos online, if the victims did not complete the sex videos. Hotel room doors were at times blocked by camera and recording equipment, and the victims felt powerless and unable to leave. When victims expressed hesitation, Garcia directed other young women to contact the victims and falsely reassure them that the videos would not be posted online and that none of the victims’ friends, families, colleagues or classmates would find out.

When they tried to stop the producers told them they would not be paid, and yet when the shoots ended many women said they were not paid the full amount promised. This suit comes as Pornhub is trying to fend off allegations that it profits from illegal content. Following an explosive New York Times column on December 4 that accused the company of hosting rape videos and child pornography, the company changed its policies so that only verified users can upload content, and started deleting millions of unverified videos from its platform. Over the past year, the GirlsDoPorn website – as well as its affiliates, MomPov and GirlsDoToys – have been permanently shuttered. The same goes for all of its fake modeling websites, such as BeginModeling.com, which were used to trick women into thinking they were a legitimate company. The sites were finally taken down in January of this year (2020), following the resolution of the civil case.

Believing she was protecting her family at her own expense, Jane Doe allowed her family — her parents, siblings, and grandparents — to believe she was a willing participant in the abuse she endured, and that she was a porn performer. Even as she’s seeing some level of justice served against those who trafficked her, Jane Doe’s pain is still very palpable. Each time she goes on a date, she internally hopes the man sitting across from her won’t search her name on the internet. Besides Foster, four of the website’s other employees have pleaded guilty to a variety of felonies. Porn actor and producer Ruben Andre Garcia, was sentenced to 20 years in prison, while videographer Theodore Gyi was sentenced to four years in prison. Val Moser, the website’s office manager and chauffeur who drove the women to and from the airport, corroborated the issue of pay.

It was a moment hundreds of women had been waiting for — and one many feared would never come. Others prosecuted include porn actor Ruben Andre Garcia, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison and Pratt’s business partner Matthew Isaac Wolfe, who received a 14-year sentence earlier this year. Videographer Theodore Gyi was sentenced to four years in prison, while administrative assistant Valorie Moser awaits sentencing later this year.

Child safety advocates celebrated a win in June, when the congressional reauthorization for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children used the term “child sexual abuse material” (CSAM) instead of “child pornography” to describe the scourge the agency seeks to eradicate. The National Center runs the CyberTipline national reporting service for online exploitation of children. Survivors of image-based sexual abuse — overwhelmingly women and girls — can experience the same kinds of mental health issues as those who have been physically sexually assaulted.
